Effective suicide care can be provided through brief, affordable approaches that save lives — reducing suicide rates by up to 75 percent. So why is it still so rarely available to the people who need it?
We provide funding to organizations providing suicide care to increase the quality and availability of these services
We support the development of leaders and clinical providers in suicide care by funding fellowships, educational opportunities, and training programs, all aimed at fostering deep expertise, comfort, and competency in caring for people struggling with suicide.
We provide grants for scientific research, innovative ideas, and emerging practices to improve suicide care. This involves validating effective suicide care practices, along with implementation science to ensure their successful adoption in health care settings.
We make grants to strengthen the essential infrastructure for effective suicide care at both the organization and system levels. This includes enhancing operational systems, implementing best practices, and funding technology or tools.
We invest in organizations and initiatives that take a system-level approach to addressing structural gaps and barriers that limit access to effective suicide care. These challenges include inadequate training, fragmented care systems, and inconsistent quality standards.
We recognize the critical role of government and policymakers in improving suicide care. Our grantmaking supports policy initiatives that address systemic barriers, expand access to evidence-based treatment, and create stronger incentives to deliver high-quality care.
Advancing peer-led alternatives to inpatient care through a pilot and evaluation of an adult peer respite program, while strengthening statewide peer specialist certification and training infrastructure to support individuals and families experiencing suicidal distress
Developing suicide care expertise among future health care providers through a fellowship program that provides opportunities for suicide prevention-specific research and clinical learning opportunities, with potential to serve as a national demonstration model for medical education
Strengthening suicide care statewide through clinician training in evidence-based therapies (CAMS & DBT), implementation of high-quality standards in Vermont emergency departments, development of regional suicide postvention response teams, and integration of the JASPR emergency department platform
Developing and implementing a new technical assistance and consultation program for hospitals and emergency departments seeking to incorporate effective suicide care into their services
Advancing, evaluating, and expanding suicide care efforts—including safety planning and teletherapy—across Henry Ford Health and other large health systems, while strengthening Henry Ford Health’s capacity to promote better access effective suicide care in other health systems nationwide

All of our grants explicitly address suicide care—which is a core component of a comprehensive suicide prevention strategy. While we do fund efforts that fall under the broader umbrella of suicide prevention—such as public awareness campaigns, crisis lines, and community-based programs—our support in these instances focus on how these efforts increase the availability of effective suicide care.
Much of our grantmaking focuses on how to increase the availability of suicide care that has a strong evidence base. At the same time, we see one of our roles as generating new insights into how to improve the delivery of suicide care. To that end, a priority for Four Pines Fund is to test and to evaluate innovative approaches to providing suicide care that show significant promise but are not yet evidence based. One such example is in the role of certified peer support providers in delivering suicide care.
People who experience or have experienced suicidal thoughts, survived suicide attempts, lost a loved one to suicide, or supported someone experiencing suicidal despair all have suicide-centered lived experience. Drawing on these perspectives and ensuring our grants fund organizations that also value and center lived experience is essential to our success. At the same time, our practices continue to evolve as we learn how to most effectively partner with and integrate lived experience perspectives in our work.
